The highly anticipated 4th Ghazala Ansari Julke Challenge Cup Ladies Open Championship is set to tee off this Friday at the prestigious Gymkhana Golf Club. This edition is particularly historic, as it marks the first time the tournament has been opened to professional female golfers, transitioning from an amateur-only competition in its previous three editions.

A Landmark Moment for Women’s Golf

During a press conference at Gymkhana Golf Club, key officials gathered to discuss the championship’s importance and evolution. Dr. Asma Afzal Shami, the visionary behind dedicating tournaments to forgotten sporting icons, emphasized that this championship serves as an inspiration for young female golfers to follow in the footsteps of Ghazala Ansari.

She was accompanied by Mr. Shaukat Javed, Convenor of Gymkhana Golf Club, alongside tournament director Bela Azam, championship coordinator Mamoona Azam, and Chief Referee Munazza Shaheen.

Gymkhana’s Commitment to Women’s Golf

Mr. Shaukat Javed highlighted the special connection between Ghazala Ansari and Gymkhana Golf Club, making it a fitting venue for the championship’s fourth consecutive edition. He reaffirmed the club’s dedication to women’s golf, noting that participation has steadily increased each year. He also praised Dr. Asma Shami and her team for their continuous efforts in promoting women’s participation in golf, both in terms of numbers and competitive skill level.

Introduction of the Professional Category

Dr. Shami expressed her appreciation for the Pakistan Golf Federation’s (PGF) decision to introduce a professional category, calling it a transformative step for women’s golf in Pakistan. She explained that the inclusion of professionals allows top amateur players to progress into the professional circuit, creating new opportunities for aspiring golfers.

“This is a significant milestone as we welcome professional female golfers to this championship. We are honored to host players from Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Goth Machi, Peshawar, Wah Cantt, Risalpur, and Multan at Gymkhana,” she stated.

Tournament Categories and Player Participation

Chief Referee Munazza Shaheen outlined the championship’s competitive structure, which now includes seven categories:

  1. Professional Golfers
  2. WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking) Open Category
  3. Category B (Handicap 13-24, Amateurs)
  4. Category C (Handicap 25-36, Amateurs)
  5. Senior Lady Golfers
  6. Junior Category (Ages 11-14)
  7. Junior Category (Ages Below 10)

A total of 80 players have registered, including five professionals and eight WAGR-ranked players, making this year’s event one of the most competitive in the tournament’s history.

Sponsorship and Tournament Growth

Bela Azam, the tournament director, reaffirmed her commitment to the championship and emphasized the critical role of Julke as the title sponsor. She highlighted how Julke’s sponsorship has been instrumental in elevating the tournament’s status, allowing for greater expansion and development.

As the championship prepares for an exciting weekend of competition, it stands as a testament to the increasing presence and recognition of female golfers in Pakistan.
