NA Committee Raises Concerns Over NGO Credibility in IFRAP

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Economic Affairs has voiced concerns regarding the credibility of certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in the Integrated Flood Resilience and Adaptation Project (IFRAP). The committee emphasized the need for improved transparency and accountability to ensure that project benefits reach the most deserving communities.

During a recent meeting led by Chairman Muhammad Atif, members highlighted issues in the selection process of beneficiaries under IFRAP. They argued that many affected individuals were being overlooked due to unclear selection criteria. To address this, the committee decided to engage with the Chief Secretary of Balochistan, urging corrective action and better monitoring of project implementation.

IFRAP: A Critical Flood Resilience Initiative

IFRAP is a three-year initiative aimed at constructing 35,100 houses for families affected by floods. With a budget of approximately $15.6 million (Rs. 4.36 billion), the project is designed to provide safer and more resilient housing solutions. However, the committee raised concerns that ineffective oversight and lack of transparency could hinder its success.

To ensure fairness and efficiency, committee members have called for a thorough review of IFRAP’s operations. They also plan to examine other major development projects, particularly in transport, water, and energy sectors, to prevent potential mismanagement. Additionally, the committee aims to provide recommendations for a proposed 10-year development plan in collaboration with the World Bank, ensuring alignment with national priorities.

By strengthening oversight and addressing accountability issues, the committee hopes to enhance the effectiveness of IFRAP and similar initiatives, ensuring that government-backed projects genuinely benefit vulnerable communities.
