Supreme Court Grants Punjab Government More Time in Bail Cancellation Appeal for May 9 Attack Accused

The Punjab government has sought additional time to present its arguments in an appeal aimed at revoking the bail granted to individuals accused of involvement in the May 9 attacks on military installations in Rawalpindi.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and including Justices Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi and Muhammad Ali Mazhar, heard the appeals filed by the Punjab government. During the proceedings, the additional prosecutor general requested an extension, stating that the government needed time to compile and submit Joint Investigation Team (JIT) reports, as the prosecution’s arguments would rely on their findings.

Chief Justice Afridi pointed out that some of the appeals were linked to case transfer requests, which had now lost relevance due to recent developments. Additionally, the court was informed that the presiding judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi had been transferred, affecting the judicial process. It was also revealed that a fine of Rs200,000 had been imposed on 11 transfer applications, indicating legal complications surrounding the case proceedings.

Recognizing the need for additional time to ensure a thorough review of the case, the Supreme Court granted the Punjab government’s request and scheduled the next hearing for a later date, allowing the prosecution to finalize its report and present its arguments comprehensively.
