The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has extended the interim bail of former First Lady Bushra Bibi in two cases related to the November 26 protests. The hearing, presided over by ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, focused on legal proceedings concerning her involvement in the cases registered at the Secretariat Police Station and the Karachi Company Police Station.
During the court session, Bushra Bibi’s legal representatives, Anser Kiyani and Shamsa Kiyani, submitted a plea requesting an exemption from her personal appearance. They cited security concerns and logistical challenges, arguing that she should not be required to attend the proceedings in person. Additionally, they sought permission for her to be interrogated in jail rather than being brought to the investigation offices. The lawyers urged the court to issue directives instructing the investigation officer (IO) to conduct the inquiry within the prison premises.
Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain acknowledged the concerns raised by her legal team and assured that the court’s order would incorporate specific instructions for her interrogation. The judge further emphasized that all legal protocols would be followed to ensure a fair investigation while addressing the security concerns surrounding the case.
Following the deliberations, the court decided to extend Bushra Bibi’s interim bail in both cases. Her bail in the Secretariat Police Station case was extended until April 28, while the extension for the Karachi Company Police Station case was granted until April 29. The court’s decision allows her legal team additional time to prepare for the upcoming proceedings and respond to the charges filed against her.
These cases stem from the protests held on November 26, which led to multiple legal actions against political figures and activists. The investigations remain ongoing, with law enforcement authorities continuing to scrutinize the role of various individuals in connection with the demonstrations. Bushra Bibi’s legal team has maintained that she has been unjustly implicated and has consistently sought relief from the judiciary to prevent any undue legal consequences.
The ATC’s ruling marks another development in the ongoing legal battles involving key political figures in Pakistan. As the hearings continue, both the prosecution and defense will present further arguments, determining the course of action regarding Bushra Bibi’s legal status and any potential consequences stemming from the charges against her.
