Afridi Calls Irfan Pathan “Dhobi ka Kutta” as War of Words Escalates

The long-standing undercurrent of tension between former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and ex-India fast bowler Irfan Pathan has boiled over into a full-fledged spat. What began as veiled jabs on social media has now spiraled into one of the most talked-about cricket controversies in recent memory.

The Trigger

The dispute reignited after Irfan Pathan took a sarcastic swipe at Afridi over his past comments on Indo-Pak cricket ties. Afridi, never known to hold back, responded with a ferocity that stunned even neutral observers.

Afridi’s Verbal Grenade

In his retort, Afridi compared Irfan to a “dhobi ka kutta” — a colloquial phrase meaning someone who belongs nowhere, neither here nor there. The Pakistani all-rounder accused Irfan of suffering from an identity crisis, attempting to please Hindutva elements in India while simultaneously portraying himself as a representative of Muslims.

The Larger Debate

The spat has now transcended cricket. Pundits on both sides of the border argue it reflects a deeper social tension: the role of Indian Muslims in an increasingly Hindutva-driven environment. Afridi’s supporters claim his comments struck at Irfan’s hypocrisy — presenting himself as a proud Muslim abroad, while in India, staying silent on issues like lynchings, Ghar Wapsi campaigns, and discrimination against minorities.

Irfan’s fans, meanwhile, accuse Afridi of crossing the line and reducing cricketing camaraderie to personal abuse. The heated exchange has divided opinion, but it has also ignited conversations about whether sportspersons should speak on socio-political issues or remain confined to their cricketing past.

Afridi’s Latest Blow

Closing his latest response, Afridi doubled down and left no room for reconciliation:

“Samajh sakte hain Irfan, dhobi k kutte wali halat par. Lekin itna b na choro… India ke andar hi Manipur, Nagaland, Kashmir, Khalistan wale apne aapko ‘Indian’ kehna beizzati samajhte hain. Bahar ki duniya to Indian pe thookti bhi nahi.”
