Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz made an unannounced visit to Mayo Hospital on Thursday, taking strict action by suspending the Medical Superintendent (MS) and CEO due to administrative negligence, poor patient care, and unsatisfactory hospital conditions.
Inspection and Findings
During her detailed tour, CM Maryam inspected critical hospital departments, including the emergency block, TB and Chest ward, ICU cardiology, and general wards. She personally interacted with patients, inquiring about their treatment and the quality of medical facilities. Many patients voiced concerns about inadequate care, shortage of medicines, and unhygienic conditions, prompting the Chief Minister to take immediate corrective action.
Upon observing overcrowded emergency wards, lack of proper medical equipment, and insufficient cleanliness, she expressed strong dissatisfaction and immediately ordered the removal of the hospital’s senior administration.
Assessment of Cleanliness & Medical Supplies
CM Maryam also evaluated the hospital’s hygiene standards and conducted a thorough inspection of the medicine storeroom to ensure the availability of essential drugs and medical supplies. Reports of expired or unavailable medicines further raised concerns about mismanagement within the hospital.
Emergency Meeting & Corrective Measures
Following her visit, CM Maryam convened an emergency meeting with health officials, instructing them to:
✅ Conduct a thorough inquiry into hospital mismanagement and staff negligence.
✅ Implement a hospital repair and maintenance plan to improve infrastructure and facilities.
✅ Ensure the availability of medicines and essential medical equipment at all times.
✅ Enhance staff accountability and introduce strict monitoring measures.
Commitment to Healthcare Reform
Emphasizing her commitment to raising healthcare standards, CM Maryam stated that no compromise will be made on patient care and hospital management. She assured that immediate reforms would be introduced to enhance the quality of treatment, cleanliness, and administrative efficiency across Punjab’s public hospitals.
This surprise inspection is part of a broader initiative to revamp Punjab’s healthcare sector, ensuring that hospitals provide adequate and efficient medical services to the people.
