Atletico Madrid delivered a dominant performance on Tuesday, securing a commanding 5-0 victory over Getafe in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, with Giuliano Simeone playing a pivotal role by scoring twice in the first half.
Simeone, son of Atletico manager Diego Simeone, opened the scoring just eight minutes into the match with a well-placed header inside the six-yard box following a precise Javi Galan cross. He doubled his tally nine minutes later with a clinical first-time finish, putting the hosts in firm control.
Getafe’s goalkeeper, Jiri Letacek, pulled off an impressive save to deny Samu Lino from close range before the half-hour mark. However, the Brazilian forward managed to extend Atletico’s lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute, skillfully cutting inside a defender before finding the net.
Early in the second half, Giuliano Simeone appeared to have completed his hat-trick, only for his 49th-minute goal to be disallowed for offside. He was substituted at the 60-minute mark, receiving a standing ovation from the home crowd for his stellar performance.
Reflecting on the match, the 22-year-old Argentine winger expressed his excitement: “I’m very happy tonight, it’s been crazy. I want to thank the team for their incredible effort. I’m happy for my goals, but I know I have many areas to improve, and I’m focused on growing every day,” he told Teledeporte.
The scoring continued late in the game as substitute Angel Correa struck a superb low shot from distance in the 78th minute to make it 4-0. Correa then turned provider, assisting Alexander Sorloth for Atletico’s fifth goal in the 86th minute, sealing a comprehensive win.
With this victory, Atletico Madrid advanced to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season. Their focus now shifts to LaLiga, where they will take on league leaders Real Madrid in a high-stakes Madrid derby on Saturday.
“Today was a tough game, so now we need to recover, prepare well, and give our all on Saturday,” Simeone added.
