The International Day of Education is being celebrated globally today, including in Pakistan, with the theme for 2025, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” This year’s theme emphasizes the profound influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies on the education sector, sparking crucial discussions on how to uphold human control and creativity in a rapidly automating world.
The observance highlights the growing complexity of AI-powered systems, which often blur the lines between human decision-making and machine-driven processes. It raises vital questions about redefining education systems to ensure they empower individuals while harnessing the transformative potential of AI. UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, has dedicated this year’s event to addressing the challenges and opportunities AI presents to the global education system.
In Pakistan, the integration of technology into education is exemplified by the efforts of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), a pioneer in providing accessible, flexible, and inclusive learning opportunities. Recognized for its extensive distance learning programs, AIOU has embraced digital tools to expand its reach and modernize its educational framework.
“AIOU has made remarkable strides in incorporating technology into education delivery,” said Bakht Rawan, Director of Public Relations. “We have implemented online systems for the registration of various programs and have successfully extended our online education platform to 36 countries, catering to more than 1,000 students abroad.” He added, “Technology played a crucial role in overcoming barriers to education, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite hurdles such as connectivity issues and resource limitations, we ensured uninterrupted learning for our students.”
The university’s adoption of AI-driven platforms has enhanced its ability to provide personalized learning experiences, streamline administrative processes, and ensure greater accessibility for students from diverse backgrounds. This approach aligns with the broader global movement toward leveraging AI to improve educational outcomes while fostering inclusivity and innovation.
As the 2025 International Day of Education draws attention to the critical intersection of AI and education, it also serves as a call to action for policymakers, educators, and technologists. The focus must remain on creating systems that amplify human creativity, ensure equitable access, and preserve the core values of education in an increasingly digital world.
From curriculum design to real-time feedback systems and enhanced distance learning capabilities, AI has the potential to revolutionize the education sector. However, the theme of this year’s event underscores the need for a balanced approach, where technology complements human agency rather than replacing it.
By fostering dialogue and collaboration among global stakeholders, the International Day of Education 2025 aims to pave the way for an educational ecosystem that blends innovation with the human touch, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive future for learners worldwide.
