The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted a gradual increase in Karachi’s temperature starting Thursday (today), with highs potentially reaching 38°C by next week.
According to Anjum Nazeer Zaigham, the Met Department’s focal person, hot and dry northwesterly winds will dominate the city during daylight hours, while the return of sea breezes in the evening will provide some relief. The temperature is expected to rise by 2-3°C in the coming days, with the heatwave likely to persist until March 11. A slight drop in temperatures is anticipated after March 12, but overall, warm conditions will continue.
Despite the increasing heat, the Meteorological Department has assured that it will not be as intense as the peak summer months of May and June, when Karachi often experiences extreme temperatures exceeding 40°C. Additionally, there are no indications of rainfall in the city during this period, meaning the dry spell will continue.
The recent shift in temperature comes after Karachi experienced an unexpected cool spell earlier this week. Cold and dry northeastern winds strengthened, bringing the minimum temperature down to 13.1°C—significantly below the March average of 19.4°C. Weather experts noted that this sudden drop was unusual for the season but was caused by changes in wind patterns affecting the region.
Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions against the rising heat, stay hydrated, and avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours.
