Peshawar – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor Haji Ghulam Ali has suggested renaming Islamabad International Airport in honor of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as a tribute to her contributions to Pakistan’s democracy.
Speaking to the media, the KP governor emphasized that Benazir Bhutto’s legacy as the country’s first female prime minister and her efforts for democratic progress deserve recognition at the national level. He highlighted her sacrifices and commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, adding that renaming Islamabad Airport after her would be a fitting tribute to her enduring influence on Pakistan’s political landscape.
The proposal has sparked discussions among political circles and the general public, with some supporting the idea as a way to honor Benazir Bhutto’s contributions, while others believe such decisions should be made through a broader political consensus.
Islamabad International Airport, which was inaugurated in 2018, is currently the country’s largest and busiest airport, serving as a major gateway for international and domestic travelers. Previously, Benazir Bhutto’s name was associated with the old Islamabad airport, which was renamed Benazir Bhutto International Airport in 2008 before being replaced by the new facility.
Governor Ghulam Ali’s suggestion has ignited a debate over whether the current Islamabad International Airport should once again carry the name of the late Benazir Bhutto or if a different approach should be taken to honor her legacy. The final decision on the matter is expected to involve discussions at the federal level.
