LHC Directs Installation of EV Charging Stations and Declares Water Emergency

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday instructed authorities to ensure that electric vehicle charging stations are available at all fuel stations as part of efforts to reduce smog.

During a hearing on environmental pollution, Justice Shahid Karim criticized the inadequate implementation of effective measures and declared a water emergency due to deteriorating conditions, mandating the installation of water meters. Additionally, the court directed the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to introduce tax incentives for environmentally friendly buildings.

The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) was ordered to restore canal water, while both LDA and DHA were instructed to establish at least one Miyawaki forest in every sector. The court also stressed the importance of an incentive program to encourage the conversion of petrol-powered rickshaws to electric ones.

Expressing dissatisfaction with WASA’s performance, Justice Karim highlighted the slow progress in installing water meters. The court scheduled the next hearing on smog-related petitions for March 21.

In an earlier session, the LHC had directed authorities to expedite the provision of health allowances for traffic wardens, develop a structured service framework for them, and establish parking facilities through a public-private partnership model.
