The Metro Bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been temporarily suspended due to a large-scale protest by lawyers. The disruption comes as legal associations stage demonstrations in the capital against the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s (JCP) session, which is set to consider the appointment of eight judges to the Supreme Court.
Authorities have confirmed that the bus service will remain unavailable from Faiz Ahmed Faiz station to the Secretariat and from Rawalpindi Saddar Station to Faiz Ahmed Faiz station. The suspension has been enforced as a precautionary measure in response to security concerns, as heavy traffic congestion and potential unrest are expected in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the JCP, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, is scheduled to meet today to discuss the promotion of high court judges to the Supreme Court. However, the session has been met with resistance, as many legal professionals are demanding that the appointment process be delayed until a ruling is issued on petitions challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The amendment, which has sparked debate, pertains to judicial appointments and the overall structure of the judiciary.
In light of the protest, security has been tightened around key government buildings and judicial offices in Islamabad. Law enforcement agencies have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any potential disruptions. Commuters have been advised to seek alternative transportation options, as the protest may lead to road closures and traffic congestion in multiple areas of the capital.
