The National Seed Policy has been officially finalized, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s agricultural sector. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, on Wednesday.
The meeting focused on outlining the administrative structure, vision, and strategic objectives of the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority (NSDRA). Key discussions emphasized the need to ensure NSDRA’s full operational functionality to address challenges in the seed industry and bolster the country’s agricultural resilience.
Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted the critical role of quality seeds in transforming Pakistan’s agricultural landscape. “High-quality seeds are the backbone of food security and are vital for enhancing agricultural productivity. The development of advanced and export-grade seeds is integral to achieving self-sufficiency and boosting our agricultural exports,” he said.
He reiterated the Ministry’s unwavering dedication to strengthening the seed sector as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s agricultural and economic growth. He also emphasized the importance of research and innovation in creating seed varieties that can withstand climate change, pests, and diseases, ensuring better yields and reducing dependency on imported seeds.
The finalized National Seed Policy aims to establish a robust framework for seed regulation, innovation, and export. It envisions fostering public-private partnerships to drive advancements in seed technology and research. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the policy aspires to enhance farmers’ access to certified seeds, improve crop yields, and create export opportunities for Pakistan’s agricultural products in international markets.
Additionally, the policy includes provisions to support small-scale farmers by improving seed distribution networks and ensuring affordability. It seeks to address challenges such as counterfeit seeds and inadequate regulatory enforcement, thereby enhancing overall sector efficiency.
This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Pakistan’s agricultural competitiveness and securing long-term food security. The government’s focus on modernizing the seed sector demonstrates its commitment to meeting the country’s growing agricultural demands and contributing to economic stability through increased agricultural exports.
With the National Seed Policy in place, Pakistan is poised to embark on a transformative journey to revitalize its agriculture sector and strengthen its position in global markets.
