Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has taken decisive action by dismissing two employees involved in a cellphone smuggling operation. A representative from PIA confirmed that the employees were terminated after a comprehensive investigation, which aligned with the airline’s internal regulations, substantiated the allegations against them. The spokesperson reiterated the airline’s strict adherence to a zero-tolerance policy regarding any violations of national laws or organizational protocols.
The incident surfaced when customs officials apprehended the crew of a PIA flight that had just arrived from Dubai to Multan, recovering a total of 78 high-value mobile phones during the process. Among these were 54 iPhones, which are collectively worth millions of rupees. This operation was initiated based on actionable intelligence received by authorities, who were prepared for the arrival of the flight. Upon intercepting the crew, customs agents found 24 iPhones concealed with two air hostesses. As the investigation progressed, it uncovered an additional 54 phones hidden by male crew members, who were subsequently summoned back from their accommodations for questioning.
The confiscated mobile devices included the latest iPhone 16 Pro models, showcasing the potential scale and value of the smuggling operation. Statements from all implicated crew members have been meticulously recorded as part of the ongoing inquiry, highlighting PIA’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
