Punjab Govt Launches Major Initiative to Support Persons with Disabilities

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a landmark initiative to distribute assistive devices to persons with disabilities, aiming to improve their mobility, communication, and overall quality of life. This step is part of the government’s broader commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and the empowerment of differently-abled individuals across Punjab.

Under this initiative, individuals with mobility impairments can apply for free wheelchairs, ensuring greater independence and accessibility in their daily lives. Similarly, those with hearing impairments will be provided with advanced hearing aids to enhance their auditory and speech capabilities. These assistive devices will significantly improve their ability to participate in education, employment, and social activities.

To streamline the process, the government has introduced an online application system, allowing persons with disabilities to apply from the comfort of their homes via adwc.punjab.gov.pk. This digital platform ensures a hassle-free experience, minimizing bureaucratic delays. Additionally, individuals can seek assistance through the dedicated helpline 1312 or visit district social welfare offices for further guidance.

Eligibility Criteria & Application Process

To qualify for the assistive devices, applicants must:
✅ Possess a valid CNIC or B-form
✅ Have a disability certificate issued by the District Disability Assessment Board

The Punjab government is also actively raising awareness about the availability of these facilities, ensuring that individuals from even the most remote areas can benefit. Social welfare officers have been tasked with identifying and assisting those in need, particularly in underserved communities.

A Broader Vision for Disability Inclusion

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reaffirmed her dedication to supporting persons with disabilities, emphasizing,
“They are valuable members of our society, and we are committed to ensuring their rehabilitation, dignity, and well-being.”

In addition to this initiative, she announced that Pakistan’s first government-run autism center is nearing completion, which will provide specialized care and support to children with autism spectrum disorders. She also highlighted the Himmat Card initiative, designed to promote economic self-reliance by offering financial assistance, employment opportunities, and vocational training for persons with disabilities.

A Commitment to an Inclusive Punjab

The Punjab government is taking significant steps toward building an inclusive society where persons with disabilities have equal opportunities. By introducing these initiatives, the administration aims to remove barriers and provide essential support, enabling them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

With these proactive measures, Punjab is setting an example for disability rights and social welfare, ensuring that every individual, regardless of physical or sensory limitations, can contribute meaningfully to society.
