In response to a surge in traffic accidents, the Sindh Transport Department has ramped up its crackdown on unfit commercial vehicles and reckless driving in Karachi.
The alarming rise in road accidents has resulted in the loss of over 100 lives across the city.
According to the department, enforcement efforts have led to the seizure of 53 vehicles and the arrest of 15 drivers for various traffic violations. Additionally, authorities have issued fines to 565 vehicles, revoked fitness certificates for seven commercial vehicles, and registered 17 FIRs under Section 279 for negligent and reckless driving.
Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasized that the ongoing campaign is focused on improving public safety by removing unsafe vehicles from the roads and holding irresponsible drivers accountable.
Karachi has witnessed a troubling increase in road crashes, with 107 fatalities reported in the first 45 days of 2025. Data from rescue services indicates that the deceased include 78 men, 14 women, 11 boys, and 4 girls.
A report from the Chhipa Welfare Association further revealed that 1,493 people sustained injuries in these accidents, including 1,290 men, 193 women, 42 boys, and 18 girls.
Traffic authorities noted that the majority of these incidents involved heavy vehicles such as dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers.
To tackle the crisis, a four-member committee has been established to analyze the causes of these accidents and propose road safety solutions. The committee will assess the fitness certifications of oil tankers, dumpers, and water tankers, as well as evaluate the licensing standards for their drivers.
